The Scouts had a wonderful trip to Kenya at Easter (2010) They went out on Good Friday and travelled to Nakuru National Park where they went on Safari. There was great excitement at seeing all the animals especially the Lions.
Then they travelled to Kisii where they helped with a project involving street boys. The Scouts helped with putting up fences, collecting water among other things, but one important thing they did was to read to the Kenyan children. All too often people think that you have to do things like building, but one of the most important things is to actually be with the boys, reading to them and hearing them read. Our scouts also played with them and they all had so much fun playing games with them and football and rugby as well. It was lovely to hear the laughter between them.
The children were also taken to see Lake Victoria, which is something the majority had never seen in real life, only on television. They were very well behaved and after they had been to the grounds of a hotel where they enjoyed sodas to drink, the staff and manager could not believe they were street boys. They were absolutely brilliant and had a wonderful time too.
When they left the project the scouts visited Naivasha where they saw Hippos before going to Nairobi and saw the elephant orphanage and the giraffe Sanctuary. It was while we were with the elephants that I reveived a message that our flight had been cancelled and rescheduled the following week. It was all because of a volcano in Iceland!!!!! We managed to get the Scouts back after 7 days and then 6 of the leaders had to wait for a further 2 days.
But a good time was had by all
